What is 3D printing?

3D printing is the process of making a 3D part from a computer generated model. A 3D printer lays down thin layers of material, one layer at a time to create the model.

What file type is needed for 3D printing?

The recommended file type for 3D printing is “.stl” or “.obj”.

Where can 3D printable files be found?

3D printable files can be found online through some online searches. Custom files can be requested to be made by a 3D modeler at JDimensions. Or they can be produced through modeling software.

Why is there a support material and removal charge on the bill?

Support material is used to support any overhang greater than 40-60°. This material is then removed after printing to keep the part looking clean. This can become a time intensive part of 3D printing so avoiding overhangs where possible is a good option.

How will the part be printed?

Parts are normally printed with the largest surface area on the print bed. With the goal of using the smallest amount of support material.

Is everything 3D printable?

Not all files are 3D printable unfortunately.

What is FDM 3D printing?

FDM 3D printing is the process of making a 3D part from layers of material. The printer prints with an X, Y, and Z axis.

Are the parts solid plastic?

The parts are normally not solid, they can be made solid if requested. A normal part is printed with .8-1.2 mm walls that are 100% solid. Inside the walls of the part it is usually only 20% full of plastic. That means the part is going to be 80% air on the inside. This is just a standard, the wall thickness can always be increased and so can the infill. If the wall thickness is increased it can increase the parts durability.

Can the 3D printed part be 2 different colors?

Yes, two colors is possible as long as the dimensions will fit the printer. The printer dimensions for 2 color 3D printing are 200mm (length), 180mm (width), 160mm (height). In certain cases parts may need to be small in order to work properly. These parts are also a little bit more expensive than normal parts because of the extra time needed to print multiple colors. It is recommend to find an online guide to help make sure the files are exported as two STL files correctly. If they are not exported correctly, JDimensions will not be able to make the part for you. Just make sure each color has its own file and exported in the same position you want it printed. For example, if the final part needs to have text on a flat surface the text must be positioned where it should be printed on the panel. The text should also be thicker than 1.2 mm in all areas.

How big of a part can be 3D printed?

The machines at JDimensions are capable of printing parts from 5 mm by 5 mm by 5 mm to 250 mm by 250 mm by 250 mm. Dual color printing has a smaller size restrictions (please refer to the 2 color printing answer).

What is a micron?

A micron is a measurement equal to 1/1000 of a millimeter.

Which micron setting is the best?

For large parts anywhere from 200-300 microns will work. As low as 100 microns can be done, but the cost will be higher. For medium size parts anywhere from 100-300 microns will work. For small size parts anywhere from 100-200 microns will work. If your part has intricate details 100-200 microns is always recommended in order to capture the details.

What colors are available?

Please refer to the continually updated color selection listed on 3DHubs during order placement. The regularly available colors are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, black, and white. Color availability also depends on the type of plastic chosen.

What types of plastic are available?

Please refer to the continually updated plastic selection listed on 3DHubs during order placement. The regularly available plastic options are PLA, ABS, PETG, TPU, TPE, NinjaFlex, Raptor PLA, Wood PLA Blend, Color Changing PLA, and Metal PLA blends.

Check out our Materials & Services page for more information.

What is the the return policy?

All custom made orders do not have a return policy. That is because there is no current easy way to recycle any returned orders. We do offer a 30 day satisfaction guarantee on custom orders though. If you are unsatisfied with your custom order please feel free to contact us through the form or on 3DHubs and we will find a solution. All general preprinted retail orders have a 30 day return policy and come with a satisfaction guarantee as well.

Can parts be picked up locally?

JDimensions do offer off site local pickups.
